Devil May Cry
Commentary
What do I have to say about Devil May Cry?
DMC is unique. I mean, I don't think I've ever been rated in how I kill things
in a game. Or the fact that the creators see it fit to have a little tongue-in-cheek
humor with Dante's office decorations (demon heads pinned to the wall with swords,
the occasion poster of a topless woman with black stars over her nipples, and
the open bottles of alcohol on Dante's desk). Dante is that kind of character—crass,
bold, and charismatic—that you like him even if he is a bit of an asshole.
The gameplay is nice in DMC, blending elements of survival horror (from the
Resident Evil series) with a traditional hack and slash-type (yay for Castlevania!).
The enemies move quickly (damn Shadows) and make you actually work for your
good ending. The repeated fights with Nelo Angelo provided intrigue, culminating
in the revelation that Nelo Angelo was actually Vergil, Dante's twin brother.
Yeah, the dialogue is corny at times. Who can forget Dante screaming, "I
should have been the one to fill your dark soul with light!"? That's just
classic. Thankfully the rest of the game makes up for it.
Over all, DMC is a great game, one you should have in your collection of must-have
PS2 games. It outshines many others already in the library of titles for the
Playstation 2, and certainly it should for years to come.
