Dante, son of Sparda
Dante is the half-human son of the demon knight, Sparda, along with his twin,
Vergil. The boys' namesakes are two poets, Dante Alighieri, the author of the
Divine Comedy, and Virgil, who guides Dante through his journey through Hell
and Purgatory, stopping at heaven. Virgil wrote the Aeneid, the tale of the
Greeks as they came to modern day Italy. (see Divine Comedy
for an old theory on the name of his mother/reason for Trish's name being what
it is.) Dante comes from the Italian "durante" meaning "long
lasting." Words like "duration" have the same root.
Two thousand years ago, Mundus, the devil prince, took it upon himself to invade
the human world. Sparda "awoke to justice" as the game puts it, and
he defeats Mundus, which highly pisses him off. Sparda seals Mundus in a vault,
pissing him off further. Soon after that, Sparda rules over the human world.
(Did he defeat Mundus just so he could have the human world? We may never know.
*fanfic writers take note, please*) He falls in love with a human woman, who
then bears him twin sons. It isn't said when this happens, however, and we can
assume that this took place anywhere from approximately thirty years to almost
two millennia ago. One thing is known, someone demonic killed his mother and
kidnapped his brother, believed to be dead, twenty years ago.
Currently, Dante has a business called, "Devil Never Cry," renamed
at the end of Devil May Cry from the original, "Devil May Cry." His
office is decorated with both the heads of demons impaled on the walls with
various pointy things and posters of nude women with strategic black stars over
their nipples. A drum set sits in one corner. Perhaps he has some musical aptitude?
Several bottles of Jack Daniels litter his desk when Trish comes to visit him
in the opening sequences of Devil May Cry. As the informant in the booklet accompanying
Devil May Cry puts it, if Dante doesn't want to take a job, even if you stacked
money to the ceiling, he'd never take it. He'll take any job involving demon
hunting or spiritualism though.
What does any of this say about him? Does it say anything at all? Am I on crack?
I'll thank you to keep your mouths shut on that last one.
Dante is a man with a great sense of Justice, inherited from Sparda, and will
not work for money. This tends towards Virtue as well, doing the act for the
sake of the act itself. He's brash, offensive, and rough around the edges which
we like in tarnished heroes. He's certainly not perfect, and perhaps that's
the way someone beomes after they lose their twin like that. He's the jackass
we all love because underneath that exterior is a noble heart that strangely
enough came from a demon.
